The Cyprus Exhibition

Cult Place of Agia Irini, Cyprus
Procession at Cult Place of Agia Irini in Cyprus

The other week we went to Medelhavsmuseet (Mediterranian museum in Stockholm). It was the first time I saw the new Cypriotic Gallery since the opening in April this year. It's probably one of the largest outside Cyprus. Chilrens grand father, who escaped the heat in southern Spain, was also with us. We admired the reconstructed cult place in Agia Irini (map), the other half of it remaining in Cyprus. Attila has illustrated images and maps to the exhibition and therefore knowledgeable in the subject. He explained that the mirror on the left side of the cult place, which makes the place look twice as big, illustrates this fact. Religious processions in Cyprus those days where spectacular, and could consist of priests, warriors with horse and carriage, youths, Egyptians, bulls, people wearing bulls masks, flute players, people carryinghermaphrodit sculptures etc.

Before we enjoyed super delicious baklava's in their Bagdad Café, which is worth a visit also if you're just passing by, we went to see the Egyptian mummies. Children where so fascinated by these "killed hemules". After the fika we also went to their well-assorted museum shop, and the children got themselves a mummie book and a mummie softie.
